Suspense | Thriller

THE WANTED by Robert Crais is the seventeenth book in the Elvis Cole and Joe Pike series.

The story is about a single mother named Devon Connor who hires Private Investigator Elvis Cole. Devon is curious about her son and wants answers. At first, the case sounds simple, but as Cole asks questions during his first meeting with Devon things take an unexpected turn. Devon's son Tyson has anxiety and hates going to school. Tyson has been expelled from two different high schools and this last school he was enrolled in is a last hope effort at getting him an education. Devon questions Tyson's behavior, but not because of his previous problems.

Devon starts to grow concerned for her son when he starts coming home from school wearing name brand clothing that she did not buy. When she asks him where he got them he immediately tells her his friend's parents own a department store and he bought them really cheap. Devon knows Tyson is not telling her the truth. Her intuition tells her something else is going on and that is why she hired Cole. His collection of new items goes from shirts to an Xbox, hidden cash, and even a Rolex it is obvious that he is doing something illegal, but what? Is it a case of sticky fingers or dealing drugs? The Rolex offers a much needed lead in the case. Cole has a friend run the serial number to see if the watch has been reported stolen. When the search comes back to the owner being Dr. Richard Slauson and a note to call the police immediately. The story takes an interesting turn from here.

I will not say too much because I do not want to give away spoilers. This is a fast-paced read that involves a Private Investigator, two hired killers, a teenager who is up to something, and a concerned mother. The pieces fall into place with each page you read and each chapter adds more questions until the huge surprise at the end. THE WANTED is full of action and suspense with mysterious characters that will take you on a truly bizarre ride. Overall, this book is perfect for anyone who loves a good suspenseful mystery thriller novel.

SUMMARY

It seemed like a simple case—before the bodies starting piling up. Investigator Elvis Cole and his partner, Joe Pike, take on the deadliest case of their lives in the new masterpiece of suspense from the #1 New York Times–bestselling author. When single mother Devon Connor hires private investigator Elvis Cole, it’s because her troubled teenage son Tyson is flashing cash and she’s afraid he’s dealing drugs. But the truth is devastatingly different. With two other partners in crime, he’s been responsible for a string of high-end burglaries, a crime spree that takes a deadly turn when one of them is murdered and Tyson and his girlfriend disappear. They stole the wrong thing from the wrong man. Determined to get it back, he has hired a team that is smart and brutal, and to even the odds, Cole calls in his friends Joe Pike and Jon Stone. But even they may be overmatched. The hired killers are leaving a trail of bodies in their wake. A few more won’t make any difference.
