NIGHTWISE introduces Laytham Ballard to readers with a
bang.
Laytham Ballard is in the same genera as Sandman Slim and
Harry Dresden. If you enjoy reading those two characters
than
you will love Laytham Ballard.
Laytham Ballard has been breaking the rules of magic since
he
was a child. He has been able to achieve things no other
magician would think to dare. Laytham was raised by his
grandmother to respect the power he had, but he never
listened
as well as he should have. He has used his powers for both
good and evil and feels he is way beyond saving. But when
an
old friend reaches out and asks for help, Laytham is
willing
to do whatever he needs to help his dying friend and maybe
save a little of himself in the process.
Surrounded by an eccentric group of characters who love and
help him, whether he wants it or not, Laytham fights an
evil
that seems to have disappeared from existence itself. No
one
can find him, not even the Devil, and time is running out.
The world these characters live in is close to ours, only
they know of the magic and powers we don't normally see.
The
strange is explained away to the rest of us while they go
behind us making things happen that can impact everyone.
Laytham's so called friends seems to demand a lot in return
for their help, and you can't help but wonder if they
really
like him...until push comes to shove and they pull out all
the
stops to make sure he succeeds in his mission.
R.S. Belcher has created a character you will love in a
dark twisted way. Laytham means well, at least some time,
but
enjoys getting the job done however he must. I hope
NIGHTWISE
is the first in a long series of books. I will put it on my
not to miss list.
R.S. Belcher, the acclaimed author of The Six-Gun Tarot and The Shotgun Arcana launches a gritty new urban fantasy series set in today's seedy occult underworld in Nightwise. In the more shadowy corners of the world, frequented by angels and demons and everything in-between, Laytham Ballard is a legend. It's said he raised the dead at the age of ten, stole the Philosopher's Stone in Vegas back in 1999, and survived the bloodsucking kiss of the Mosquito Queen. Wise in the hidden ways of the night, he's also a cynical bastard who stopped thinking of himself as the good guy a long time ago.
Now a promise to a dying friend has Ballard on the trail of an escaped Serbian war criminal with friends in both high and low places--and a sinister history of blood sacrifices. Ballard is hell-bent on making Dusan Slorzack pay for his numerous atrocities, but Slorzack seems to have literally dropped off the face of the Earth, beyond the reach of his enemies, the Illuminati, and maybe even the Devil himself. To find Slorzack, Ballard must follow a winding, treacherous path that stretches from Wall Street and Washington, D.C. to backwoods hollows and truckstops, while risking what's left of his very soul . . . .
