Phyllis tries her best not to be part of the investigation into the death of a local surgeon but nothing goes as planned. Phyllis and Carolyn are gearing up for another baking competition while Sam is looking for a dog to adopt.
Sam has brought Phyllis to the local shelter, and while they are looking at the dogs, one of the workers brings in a dog that has been hit by a car. Sam jumps into gear and takes the dog to a vet, Dr. Baxter who is so good with Sam's new dog, Buck, both Sam and Phyllis are impressed with his gentleness.
Dr. Baxter and his wife are having marital problems, but he really loves her. When his wife is found murdered, the police arrest him since they were heard having a fight earlier that morning. Sam tries to investigate on his own, but he isn't getting very far so he begs Phyllis to help him. When Dr. Baxter's lawyer hears the two of them are investigating, he hires them as consultants.
One little slip of the tongue will lead Phyllis in a direction the police never considered.
Ms. Washburn continues her Fresh-Baked Mysteries with TRICK OR DEADLY TREAT. The former teacher and her friends get involved in another mystery just before Halloween. Phyllis and Sam are pushed to find the killer before Dr. Baxter loses his practice. TRICK OR DEADLY TREAT is a welcome addition to the series. The characters are so much fun; although I am wondering when Phyllis and Sam are going to admit their feelings for each other. The mystery is well-crafted and will keep the reader intrigued as they follow the clues.
