Kat Lane carries the grief of her long-dead father everywhere she goes. He was murdered on the street, and now Kat works with inmates in a prison as a tutor to fulfill her promise to give back. When Kat meets Wesley Carter, one of her students, sparks fly. The closer they get, the more they try to deny their connection and resist, but once Carter is released on parole, they may find it impossible to stay away from each other.
A POUND OF FLESH is a sizzling romance that explores the powerful connection between two people, even when it is forbidden. Kat and Carter are both distinctive characters who have excellent chemistry together. Their journey is full of obstacles that stand in the way of them being together, and as they slowly fall in love, it becomes almost impossible not to hope that they find a happy ending. From the prison rules to Kat's own family's disapproval, Sophie Jackson does a remarkable job of still adding in scenes of hope throughout the story that make you believe they have a chance.
As much as I love the main characters, the story has a tendency to be a little longwinded, and some characters come across particularly flat. There are several scenes that are unnecessary, especially the parts with Kat's other potential love interest. The relationship between Kat and her mother is nicely dynamic, but her mother feels one-dimensional and repetitive. Even so, this long novel reads quickly, leading to a satisfying conclusion that solidly wraps up the story.
Though there are some flaws, I highly recommend A POUND OF FLESH to romance readers looking for an emotional, conflicting story. Sophie Jackson knows how to pull readers in, and this book is certain to be enjoyed by many.
