After stepping down as the Beast Lord and Consort, Kate and Curran are trying to live their lives a little more under the radar. Kate is hoping her biggest problem is managing Julie but if you know anything about this world, it's that nothing is ever that easy.
When a disappearance is reported, Kate and Curran find themselves back in action. Kate also finds herself getting involved with the Mercenary Guild and their politics. Everyone is experiencing a setback and nothing is running as smoothly as it should be so naturally Andrews further explores that in MAGIC SHIFTS. You'll see a lot of the easy banter between characters and the same high level of action we expect in the books. As they merge several different mythologies, as a reader, you are never getting anything you've ever seen before. It's always new and exciting creatures, which isn't necessarily a good thing for Kate but she seems to be managing herself well.
After the hell ride of the previous books, MAGIC SHIFTS seems a little more mellow in the first half. It takes its time exploring a bit of what daily life with Kate and Curran is when they aren't immersed in blood and gore. But then it zooms forward with action, suspense, and plenty of intrigue to keep readers on the edge of their seats. There is no question that Ilona and Andrew are excellent storytellers and with their strong authorial voices. I don't think the Kate Daniels series will ever show signs of stopping.
