Alanis inherited a tarot reading business from her mother, a con artist, and stayed to try and help the people her mother conned. Strangely, her attempts keep getting her tied up in mysteries. Alanis also has a problem with the people her mother made angry trying to kill her, but why would she let that spoil a good mystery.
When Marsha, her mother's former client, comes to her in fear of her violent husband, Alanis doesn't hesitate to help out. The real problems start when Marsha's husband, Bill, shows up dead and she becomes the main suspect. Now Alanis must find the real killer before Marsha winds up in jail for a very long time.
Alanis enlists a few unwitting people to try and find the killer. The laughs keep coming and somehow she finds the truth, gets a date with a good looking guy and manages to stay alive.
I love the Tarot Mystery series by Steve Hockensmith and Lisa Falco. It has great characters, great mystery, and a great story. FOOL ME ONCE is the second book in the series and it delivers laughs and whodunit cozy mystery. FOOL ME ONCE ended on a oh-my-gosh moment and I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
After taking over the White Magic Five & Dime, Alanis
McLachlan is trying to make up for her motherβs con jobs by
tracking down old customers and making amends. When Martha,
one of the most loyal clients, comes looking for a way out
of her abusive marriage, Alanis does everything she can to help.
But helping Martha leads to unforeseen consequences . . .
including murder. When Marthaβs husband is found dead, the
police show up at Alanisβs door. And things only get more
complicated as she tries to clear her name from the top of
the suspect list. With her growing mastery of the tarot and
the Fool card to guide her, can Alanis find her way to the
truth before the killer gets to her first?
