Evie Bloomfield is hoping for a promotion at her job with a Chicago advertising firm when she sets off for Mackinac Island. She's supposed to help her bosses father with his bike shop.
Rudy broke his leg and really hoped his daughter would help him out. Instead, he gets Evie who wants to paint the building. Rudy's business is being threated by the Historical Society since his building doesn't meet their stringent criteria.
Evie discovers the body of Bunny Harrington later. Since Bunny's brakes were tampered with and she was just threatening Rudy, Rudy becomes the prime suspect.
Since Evie can just see her promotion sliding down the tubes, Evie decides she has to solve the mystery of Bunny's death and keep Rudy's business afloat.
As an outsider, Evie keeps the locals alienated in her quest for the killer, especially the interim police chief. At the same time, she finds herself happier than she has ever been. Life on Mackinac Island has her doing things she's never done before.
GEARED FOR THE GRAVE has the perfect combination of events for a comedic mystery. The humorous elements had me laughing out loud. The search for the killer had some unusual moments with a surprise ending. There is also a good looking police chief who seems more annoyed at Evie but there a a couple of moments where the attraction surfaces past the irritation.
This is my first Duffy Brown book but I enjoyed it so much that I will be searching out her other series. It also has me greatly anticipating the next book in the Cycle Path series.
