Mystery Cozy

Evie Bloomfield is hoping for a promotion at her job with a Chicago advertising firm when she sets off for Mackinac Island. She's supposed to help her bosses father with his bike shop. Rudy broke his leg and really hoped his daughter would help him out. Instead, he gets Evie who wants to paint the building. Rudy's business is being threated by the Historical Society since his building doesn't meet their stringent criteria. Evie discovers the body of Bunny Harrington later. Since Bunny's brakes were tampered with and she was just threatening Rudy, Rudy becomes the prime suspect. Since Evie can just see her promotion sliding down the tubes, Evie decides she has to solve the mystery of Bunny's death and keep Rudy's business afloat. As an outsider, Evie keeps the locals alienated in her quest for the killer, especially the interim police chief. At the same time, she finds herself happier than she has ever been. Life on Mackinac Island has her doing things she's never done before. GEARED FOR THE GRAVE has the perfect combination of events for a comedic mystery. The humorous elements had me laughing out loud. The search for the killer had some unusual moments with a surprise ending. There is also a good looking police chief who seems more annoyed at Evie but there a a couple of moments where the attraction surfaces past the irritation. This is my first Duffy Brown book but I enjoyed it so much that I will be searching out her other series. It also has me greatly anticipating the next book in the Cycle Path series.

SUMMARY

FIRST IN A NEW SERIES! Mackinac Island is a peaceful summer resort town where everyone coasts through the streets on bicycles. But after someone sends a prominent local on her final ride, it’s up to one resourceful visitor to get things running again… Hoping to shift her chances of a promotion in her favor, Evie Bloomfield heads to Mackinac Island to assist her boss’s father. Rudy Randolph has broken his leg and operating his bike shop, Rudy’s Rides, is too much to handle by himself. But Evie’s good turn only leads to more trouble… After Evie’s arrival, wealthy resident Bunny Harrington dies in what looks like a freak bike accident. Upon closer inspection, Bunny’s brakes were tampered with, and now the prime suspect in her murder is also Bunny’s number one enemy: Rudy. So if Evie hopes to stay on her boss’s good side, she’ll need to steer Rudy clear of jail. Now she must quickly solve this mystery so she can put the brakes on the real killer’s plan…
