Silver Sweethearts is set in Nevada in 1869. Susan Marie Van Pelt leaves her Uncle's brownstone in New York City to join her father on his silver claim in Nevada. Having just enough money to get to the claim, she arrives only to find out that her father died a month prior. She finds herself partnered with a crude miner named Jed Miller.
Jed Miller has recently buried his friend and partner, Digger Van Pelt. Now his daughter shows up, after he already sent word for her not to come. When he sees Susan in the company of Henry Fox, the local attorney, Jeb feels like he needs to protect her.
When Susan meets Fox, she is smitten with his gentlemanly manners. She agrees to visit him to go over her father's affairs, but when he discloses that she must work the claim for ten days in order to keep it, she is furious that Jed never told her. However, when Fox proposes marriage to her in order to obtain her half of the claim, she buys herself some time and goes to Jed to get some answers.
Susan arrives at the claim alone and furious. Knowing that Fox has set his sights on the claim, and will even propose marriage to her in order to get it, Susan comes up with the only plan she feels that would work. A marriage of convenience.
After the pair weds, they return to the claim in order to work together to keep the claim and the silver out of Fox's hands. However the more time the pair spend together, the more they get to know each other, and the more their feelings grow. Jed had promised Susan that they would not consummate their marriage, but the more time he spends with her, the more he wants to bed her.
I really enjoyed SILVER SWEETHEARTS. Jackie Leigh Allen's writing flows beautifully in this novel. Her characters are simple, yet really well written into the storyline. You can't help but want the best future for these two, since their lives before meeting each other weren't so wonderful. SILVER SWEETHEARTS is my first time reading a novel by Jackie Leigh Allen, and I will surely be looking for more from her.
