Mystery
LOST RIVER is a story that follows the lives of DC Ben
Cooper and DS Diane Fry. DC Cooper finds the body of a
young girl in the river and it is initially determined that
it is an accident. DC Cooper is affected by the sight of
the girl and his memories of the event so he begins looking
into the family. The more he discovers the more
uncomfortable he becomes with the thinking this is an
accident. His supervisor tells him to back off, but his
sixth sense tells him to keep pushing.
At the same time DS
Fry is dealing with the case in which she was the victim.
Many years ago she was gang raped while on duty and the
suspects were never caught. Now there has been a DNA match
and the case has been reopened. When DS Fry goes back to
the town where the crime occurred she must deal with old
memories and new and shocking information.
There was a lot to like about LOST RIVER. It's an exciting
look at the lives of two interesting British police
officers. Americans will enjoy reading about the locations
and descriptions of these towns and the people in them. One
area that the American reader will have a hard time
understanding is how such a crime could occur to an on duty
police officer. What most readers will be shocked to
realize is that DS Fry wasn't carrying a weapon, yes, she
was sent out to patrol a dark abandoned building at night
by herself without any back up or weapon. It is hard to
get past this but when you do the rest of the story works.
You will try to solve the death of the girl by yourself and
want to help DS Fry resolve the case in which she was the
victim. LOST RIVER is part of a series about Cooper and
Fry
that is easily read as a standalone. You will want to read
future stories about these two police officers. Read and
enjoy LOST RIVER by Stephen Booth.
SUMMARY
This atmospheric thriller is perfect for fans of Ian Rankin
and Peter Robinson. A holiday weekend is ruined by a drowning in a picturesque
village. The incident not only traumatizes Detective Cooper,
a helpless witness to the tragedy, but leads him to become
involved in the tangled lives of the victim's family. As he gets to know them, Cooper begins to suspect that one
of them is harboring a secret that the whole family is
desperate to cover up. Meanwhile, Detective Fry embarks on a personal journey back
to her roots. As she finds herself drawn into an
investigation of her own, Fry realizes there is only one
person she can rely on for the help she needs. But that man is Ben Cooper, and he's back in Derbyshire,
where his suspicions lead him toward a shocking discovery on
the banks of another Peak District river.
