As determined by the queen bee Sugar sets on a map, Sugar is
headed towards New York now. Never sure of what the place
will hold for her, Sugar nevertheless looks on the bright
side and hopes for nothing more than to make new friends and
take care of her bees. This time, her destination holds
something else for her in the form of handsome Theo, but
Sugar doesn't want romance after a heartbreak from the past.
Alongside a group of people who have lost their way a bit,
Sugar will have to learn how to let someone else be her
friend to her for once.
THE WEDDING BEES by Sarah-Kate Lynch is an enjoyable women's
fiction full of honey sweetness, eclectic characters, and
dash of Southern charm. I love the mix of characters with
Ruby's struggle with her weight and wedding scrapbook,
George's old, gentleman charm and care, and many more. The
writing flows beautifully and has a feel to it that matches
the drop of honey that seems to make everything better in
food.
Though THE WEDDING BEES has excellent moments, and I greatly
enjoy the writing, Sugar is a hard character for me to
connect to (minus the Southern upbringing). She comes off as
sort of perfect sometimes, and I really just wanted to see
more human in her. Theo is also another I found hard to
connect with, because he tells her on their second meeting
that he wants a future together. While I like how realistic
Sugar's reaction is, I never swayed more towards him like
she starts to.
I absolutely think other readers who enjoy a good women's
fiction with romance will have a super easy time connecting
with Sugar and Theo. When it comes down to it, I just don't
think THE WEDDING BEES was the novel for me. However,
Sarah-Kate Lynch is clearly an amazing writer with her
smooth chapters and dialogue, and I would eagerly try
another story of hers.
Sugar Wallace did not believe in love at first sight, but
her bees did. . . .
Every spring Sugar Wallace coaxes her sleepy honeybee queen—
presently the sixth in a long line of Queen Elizabeths—out
of the hive and lets her crawl around a treasured old map.
Wherever the queen stops is their next destination, and this
year it's New York City.
Sugar sets up her honeybees on the balcony of an East
Village walk-up and then––as she's done everywhere since
leaving South Carolina––she gets to know her neighbors. She
is, after all, a former debutante who believes that manners
make the world a better place even if they seem currently
lacking in the big city.
Plus, she has a knack for helping people. There's Ruby with
her scrapbook of wedding announcements; single mom Lola;
reclusive chef Nate; and George, a courtly ex-doorman. They
may not know what to make of her bees and her politeness,
but they can't deny the magic in her honey.
And then there's Theo, a delightfully kind Scotsman who
crosses Sugar's path as soon as she gets into town and is
quickly besotted. But love is not on the menu for Sugar. She
likes the strong independent woman she's become since
leaving the South and there's nothing a charmer like Theo
can do to change her mind . . . only her bees can do that.
The Wedding Bees is a novel about finding sweetness where
you least expect it and learning to love your way home.
