Just as thirty-something Abby was trying on her wedding dress, she got news that her fiancΓ© didn't want to be with her anymore...through Facebook. Turning to ice cream, Abby mopes until her best friend, Grace, comes up with a plan to get her back on track. The two head to Newport for some beach and sun. While Abby makes friends and goes on interesting, if not always successful dates, she will have to figure out what it means to be single again and how perfectly great that can be.
ON THE ROCKS by Erin Duffy is the perfect beach read full of summer, sand, and friendship. Abby is a funny, heart-warming character whose journey is completely relatable as she tries to find her own footing again after a big change. I love some of the eccentric and kind secondary characters around her, even her mother who pushes attempts at reclaiming her youth to new degrees.
Though there are hilarious scenes of Abby going on different dates, friendship and personal growth are the focuses of the story. Abby has to figure out that being on your own doesn't always mean literally being on your own when you have great friends. The interactions between her and Grace are realistic and will easily remind you of times with your own best friend. I also adore Bobby and the closeness Abby finds with him. Plus, they have some of the wittiest dialogue in the whole book.
If you're looking for a great summer read or an excellent women's fiction story, ON THE ROCKS is a perfect pick. Erin Duffy's smooth writing will make you feel right at home with these characters, and you'll find yourself smiling nearly constantly will you read.
A heartwarming novel about friendship, family, and finding
love in the Facebook Age not to mention the perils,
pitfalls, and dubious pleasures of being a modern young
single woman from Erin Duffy, the author of Bond Girl. Six
months ago, Abby's life fell apart for the entire world to
see. Her longtime boyfriend-turned-fiancΓΒ©, Ben,
unceremoniously dumped her on Facebook while she was trying
on dresses for the big day. When the usual remedies multiple
pints of Ben & Jerry's, sweatpants, and a comfy couch fail
to work their magic, her best friend, Grace, devises a plan
to get Abby back on her game. She and Abby are going to
escape Boston and its reminders of Ben and head to Newport
for the summer. There, in a quaint rented cottage by the
sea, the girls will enjoy cool breezes, cocktails, and
crowds of gorgeous men. But no matter where they go, Abby
and Grace discover that in this era of social media when
seemingly everyone is preserving every last detail of their
lives online there is no real escape. Dating has never been
easy. But now that the rules are more blurred than ever, how
will they find true love? And even if they do, can romance
stand a chance when a girl's every word and move can go
viral with a single click?
