With three jobs and a past that won't leave her alone, Bethany is not looking for romance. After a chance encounter with detective Damian, she can't help but think romance might be looking for her. The two feel a connection they can't ignore, and soon they are agreeing to start a relationship. As much fun as Bethany is having with him, she can't fool the detective when it comes to evasive answers about her past. Before long, Bethany will either have to face the consequences that will come when she tells him the truth or Damian will be forced to see for himself when the past won't leave her alone.
DESERT HEAT by Elizabeth Reyes is an enjoyable read with a mystery that will evade you until nearly the very end. Bethany is running from something from her past, and while I had several theories while reading, none came close to what the real story was. The mystery will keep you turning the pages and even occasionally getting frustrated over it, just like Damian. The real story might be a little disappointing after so much build up, however.
Though I love the intrigue, I wasn't so on board with the romance. Bethany and Damian do have some great heat between them, but I had a hard time connecting with them and supporting their relationship. They discuss numerous times how they have such strong, special feelings towards each other from the start, but it's hard to see exactly what those feelings are actually based on. But even though it wasn't a romance for me, I could easily see readers who are more fans of quick and extremely romantic romance enjoy it more.
If you enjoy fast love and some nice steamy scenes, DESERT HEAT would be a good book to try. Elizabeth Reyes tells a story filled with mystery, suspense, and chemistry. Though it wasn't my favorite, I will definitely still look for more books from Reyes in the future.
