After Juliet dies, Romeo is still left alive, the poison not being enough to kill him. Now, he searches for a way to bring her back, even if it means going to the underworld.
After seeing his father's ghost, Hamlet can't contain his curiosity about the portal his father told him to watch over--a portal that leads to the dead. When Romeo asks for his help, the two go in to find Juliet. While there, they all discover that getting in might not have been so hard but getting out will be a challenge that might cost more than their lives-it could cost their very souls.
SUCH SWEET SORROW by Jenny Trout is an absolutely incredible twist on William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet. Trout combines the two in the most clever ways that will make you eager to find out what happens next. I love how it starts with the end of Romeo's tale and meshes it with the beginning of Hamlet's. It is superbly crafted and gives the setting a dark, sometimes funny, very Shakespearean feel.
The shining star of this story, for me, is in the characters. Romeo, Juliet, and Hamlet have phenomenal character development. You see the faults many people have already given them after reading the classic stories, but then you see them grow and evolve through some of them. Juliet, most of all, takes dramatic turns that show how strong and how much of a fighter she really is. Romeo can be moody, but he always tries to improve, and he loves fiercely. Hamlet, though sometimes angry and seemingly mad, turns into one of the most loyal characters in the story. They are all so complex, and the plot follows them perfectly, giving them tests when they need them and some peace when they don't.
Overall, the entire story will leave you with a feeling that reflects the title: the sweet sorrow that only comes from having finished a wonderful book that you both never wanted to end and were dying to know what happened. SUCH SWEET SORROW is perfect for any fans of unique and original re-tellings and re-imaginings of Shakespeare's works. I definitely hope to see a possible sequel from Jenny Trout or any new book!
Never was there a tale of more woe than this of Juliet and
her Romeo...
But true love never dies. Though they're parted by the veil
between the world of mortals and the land of the dead, Romeo
believes he can restore Juliet to life, but he'll have to
travel to the underworld with a thoroughly infuriating
guide.
Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, may not have inherited his
father's crown, but the murdered king left his son a much
more important responsibilityβ-a portal to the Afterjord,
where the souls of the dead reside. When the determined
Romeo asks for help traversing the treacherous Afterjord,
Hamlet sees an opportunity for adventure and the chance to
avenge his father's death.
In an underworld filled with leviathan monsters, ghoulish
shades, fire giants, and fierce Valkyrie warriors, Hamlet
and Romeo must battle their way through jealousy, despair,
and their darkest fears to rescue the fair damsel. Yet
finding Juliet is only the beginning, and the Afterjord
doesn't surrender souls without a price...
