She learns that no one in her life is what she thinks not even herself. Joan over comes much in this story and gains strength beyond what is accepted of a Victorian woman. The interactions of the characters hold true to the time frame and it is enjoyable watching Joan push the boundaries of what a strong woman can be. She must chose not only what is best for her future but for her heart.
