From Beauty and the Beast to The Snow Queen, GRIM is full of
fairy tale retellings from a collection of young adult
authors. Myra McEntire, Amanda Hocking, Julie Kagawa, and
many more work their magic under Christine Johnson in this
collaboration of tales.
As a lover of all things fairy tale, GRIM is such a pleasure
to read. The different worlds to be explored, the unique
characters to get to know, the endings that never reveal
their happiness level until the very last sentence, all
await readers in this collection. All of the tales are short
stories, so it also makes for not only a quick read, but a
read that lets you pause between tales or even read
alongside something else if you enjoy reading more than one
book at a time. I love reading multiple books at a time, so
being able to stop at a definite place between stories was
excellent.
For the stories themselves, there are ones I love more than
others, but there isn't any tale that I dislike. Themes
range from incest to cannibalism to finding beauty to
learning to love to much, much more, offering a little
something for everyone whether you enjoy the more romantic
side of the tales or the creepy, more than a little
disturbing but in the best way side. My personal favorites
are THE RAVEN PRINCESS, which shows that real love does not
always lead to a traditional ending, THE REAL BOY, which is
one of the sweetest stories I've ever read, and BEAUTY AND
THE CHAD for its delightful quirky and awkwardness that make
it so endearing.
If you have any interest in fairy tales, I highly suggest
giving GRIM a chance. It is delightful and highly
entertaining and makes for a perfect bedtime story (though
you might want to keep a light on after reading some of
them).
Inspired by classic fairy tales, but with a dark and
sinister twist, Grim contains short stories from some of
the
best voices in young adult literature today.
