"What if fairy tale characters had to live in our world?"

Fresh Fiction Review

Fantasy

In the modern world, fairy tale characters don't always fit in. Surprisingly, that is part of what makes them so much like every day people. The characters have to face things like dating, getting jobs, dealing with social media, and feeling generally unaccepted and unappreciated in society. In the end, will they still get their happily ever after?

ALICE IN TUMBLR-LAND by Tim Manley is a hilarious, sarcastic, and surprisingly still touching collection of revamped fairy tale characters. The stories come off as a bit confusing at first, but it keeps alternating between several different characters quickly, but eventually the style affirms itself, and you find yourself not being able to put it down. The characters included range from popular ones like The Ugly Duckling and Cinderella while also throwing in some of the more minor ones like the Prince and the Pauper. My personal favorites are the stories of Beauty and the Beast and Snow White. Beauty has to deal with modern day standards of beauty, but the ending to their story is one of the sweetest ones in the book in the simplest way. I laughed out loud when Snow White's story involved her not wanting to have kids up front. The different takes on the characters are definitely amusing, and it makes for a quick read.

What I also enjoy about this book is the supplemental illustrations that give it a real fairy tale book like feel. They aren't the most romantic of drawings, but they are shown in a more realistic way that compliments the book well visually. Some of the Little Mermaid ones are my favorite, because they give a good extension of her character that the text doesn't always go into.

Overall, I wouldn't suggest this if you want a serious, deeply plotted retelling or reimagining, but if you are looking for something funny and different with several surprising doses of sweet, then I would add this to your to-read shelf.

SUMMARY

Disney meets Lena Dunham in this illustrated humor book featuring your favorite fairy-tale characters dating and finding their way in 21st-century America The Ugly Duckling still feels gross compared to everyone else, but now she’s got Instagram, and there’s this one filter that makes her look awesome. Cinderella swaps her glass slippers for Crocs. The Tortoise and the Hare Facebook stalk each other. Goldilocks goes gluten free. And Peter Pan finally has to grow up and get a job, or at least start paying rent. Here are more than one hundred fairy tales, illustrated and re-imagined for today. Instead of fairy godmothers, there’s Siri. And rather than big bad wolves, there are creepy dudes on OkCupid. In our brave new world of social networking, YouTube, and texting, fairy tales can once again lead us to “happily ever after”—and have us laughing all the way.
