The Roman numerals I through VII rule Kitty Doe's life. Kitty just wanted to be a IV, so she could rise above her status as a worthless extra child and marry her boyfriend. Everyone thought she had it in her, but after the test, she gets a III, a sentence to a miserable life. When the ruler of the country comes to her and offers her a chance to be a VII, the highest rank which one can only be born into, she can't do anything but say yes. However, saying yes also means impersonating Lila Hart and taking on the challenge of stopping a rebellion while not getting killed.

PAWN by Aimée Carter is easily one of the best books I've read this year. It is exciting, full of action, and it contains so many feelings, I'm surprised I didn't explode halfway through. Kitty faces a challenge that, though the situation is very different, many people come across; should she run away and take the easier way out or stay and fight for something that almost guarantees her death but also might guarantee a better future for everyone else? This makes her character very relatable, and I love her so much that I nearly wanted her to take the easy way out at one point. Her character grows so much, and the action constantly surrounding her keeps you guessing the entire time.

For anyone who is a fan of dystopian novels or who likes a heroine with a brave, but often confused heart, PAWN is definitely the novel to pick up. The pacing goes so quickly that it doesn't take long to read at all, and I really hope there is a sequel. Aimée Carter has written an excellent story with strong characters, and Kitty is someone you will want to read more and more about.
