Fresh Fiction Review

Pretty Dark Nothing

Young Adult

Quinn doesn't sleep much, not since the demons started haunting her nightmares. She tells herself it's all in her head, but when she starts hearing them when she's awake, she doesn't know what to do. As they slowly start to take off her life, she tries to fight against their power with the help of Aaron.

PRETTY DARK NOTHING by Heather Reid is a dark, insanely enjoyable read for YA fans. I didn't expect not to like it, but I am amazed by how much I love this book. Quinn and her demons, both internal and external, hook you from the first chapter. The mystery behind what they are keeps you from putting the book down. It is a great read for a dark, stormy night. The descriptions of them and the powerful emotion they invoke in Quinn is written so skillfully with great rhetoric. They aren't too lengthy or too wordy, but flow and give the story a fast pace.

Aaron, Quinn's love interest, is different from the average guy. He has a power that sets him apart, a power that works well with Quinn's needs. However, I do wish that he would have been more proactive in using it. It seems to just play a part in the story here and there when it could use a bigger focus. Even so, I do still love his character, and I find it very refreshing that neither him nor Quinn are overly dramatic about the other. Their relationship is slow to develop, even seemingly impossible at times, but the twists and turns throughout are exciting and occasionally emotional.

Overall, I adore this novel. It has qualities I don't like as much with Aaron's lack of power use, but the fight between good and evil is excellent. Hopefully, there will be a sequel, because I can't wait to read more of Quinn's story.

SUMMARY

Quinn is a normal teenager, but for 23 days she has not slept for more than a few minutes at a time. Demons have invaded her dreams, stalking her and whispering of her death. The lack of sleep and crippling fear are ruining her life, and energy drinks and caffeine pills don't help. Then Quinn dozes off in the school hallway, and Aaron, an amnesiac with psychic ability, accidentally enters her nightmare. Aaron has a secret locked away in his memory that the demons are determined to keep him from discovering. Together, Quinn and Aaron can banish the darkness back to the underworld for good, but the demons will stop at nothing to drive the two apart.
