When Katie's friend, Autumn, is found dead all the evidence points toward Autumn's boyfriend, Hunter. The farther they go into the investigation, attempts are made on Katie's life.

Katie is still dealing with the information that she is light witch and trying to determine what that means. She is happy working in her aunt and uncle's bakery and learning witchcraft.

When someone attempts to kill Katie, her mother comes to town suddenly. Now, she has to deal with the investigation and her mixed up feeling toward her mother. As Katie and her mother talk about the past, they start to resolve their differences.

Even with Autumn's killer under arrest there are events driving Katie to the swamp. Autumn ran an environmental organization called Georgia Wild. She was determined to save a swamp from development. Not only was there a possibility of an endangered species but the development is being done by Katie's enemy, Heinrich Dawes and his company.

What Katie finds will not only drive her closer to understanding her powers but she will learn that she can't work alone. She will need all her friends as she combats the latest evil.

Ms. Cates's writing is maturing as the Magical Bakery Mystery series progresses. While I enjoyed the first two books, this one really gripped me as I read. It was hard to put down the book as Katie investigated the mysteries of the swamp and faced the darkest evil so far.
