Katharine Tulman, age 17, has just been sent to her uncle's
estate to determine if he is a lunatic by her aunt. Intent
on getting in and out of there as quick as possible, what
Katharine doesn't understand is the mystery behind the
rumors of the lunacy and just how special one home can be.
Sharon Cameron spins an incredible tale of love, family, and
the magic of one place in THE DARK UNWINDING. When Katharine
first takes her journey, the curiosity about the mystery of
her uncle and the estate is riveting. I had several
theories, but none compared to the shock and beauty truly
behind it. The pacing isn't too fast or slow, but with the
action in the plot and the suspense that builds throughout,
THE DARK UNWINDING is a read you can't put down.
Within the beauty of the story, the characters shine the
most. Uncle Tully is one of the most precious characters I
have ever read. The little details in his personality from
how he addresses Katharine to the sheer joy he displays when
he works makes him feel real. The relationship between him
and Katharine, as well as the servants, highlights the power
of what love can do. Their dynamic throughout the story is
both moving and powerful.
Lane, though he frustrates me at the end, is a top notch
love interest. He is quiet and serious with a hidden wicked,
fun side that I cheer for every time it comes out. I like
the balance he brings about in Katharine, and I can't wait
to see what happens next for them.
Overall, I love this book. It sinks you right into its world
from the first pages and captures your heart until the very
last page. I can't wait to read the sequel and find out what
the characters go through next.
When a rumor that her uncle is squandering away the family
fortune surfaces, Katharine Tulman is sent to his estate to
have him committed to an asylum. But instead of a lunatic,
Katharine discovers a genius inventor with his own set of
childlike rules, who is employing a village of nine hundred
people rescued from the workhouses of London.
Katharine becomes torn between protecting her own livelihood
and preserving the peculiar community she grows to care for
deeply -- a conflict made more complicated by her developing
feelings for her uncle's handsome apprentice.
As the mysteries of the estate begin to unravel, it is clear
that not only is her uncle's world at stake, but also the
state of England as Katharine knows it. With twists and
turns at every corner, this extraordinary adventure will
captivate readers with its thrills and romance.
