Attorney Clare Westbrook and homicide detective Tony Sonterra leave the battle-scarred streets of Phoenix behind them for a quieter life in the Arizona desert. Clare is four months pregnant and Tony has accepted a job as the Chief of Police in Dry Creek, near Tucson.
Sonterra befriended a young, Mexican boy eight months earlier and wrangled him a job in his family's landscape business. Immigration found the boy a few weeks after he arrived, during a routine green-card check, and sent him home to Mexico. Tony has just identified the boy's body at the Pima County Forensic Science Center. Maybe because of his own Hispanic heritage, Tony thought he could make a difference, if only for this one boy.
Clare knows this is the reason Tony accepted the job in Dry Creek. She also knows the job has something to do with the stream of illegal immigrants flooding in from Mexico and the "coyotes" -- the sleazy flesh smugglers who run Mexican nationals across the border for a very large price. They lock their "clients" in the trunks of cars, in airless vans, in "safe houses" with no food or water, often just shooting them and leaving them in the desert for the buzzards. Tony has chosen this battle because he can't just roll over and let these "coyotes" keep on killing innocent people. Clare looks forward to starting up a new law practice and preparing for the birth of their child.
But, if you've read DON'T LOOK NOW and NEVER LOOK BACK, you know that Tony and Clare's life together is far from quiet, far from peaceful, far from sedate, far from normal. Dry Creek is no exception when they're drawn into a roller coaster ride of mystery, deception, secrets and murder, with the body count rising daily and both of them fighting for their own personal survival.
Miller never disappoints her readers with her exceptional storytelling. ONE LAST LOOK is an incredible conclusion to this romantic suspense series that will leave you breathless. As the desert heat reaches a fever pitch, so does this story, not to mention the chemistry between Tony and Clare, which singes the pages. This stunning series will be one of my favorites for years to come. It's a keeper -- don't miss it.
