Fresh Fiction Review

Under The Never Sky

Young Adult Science Fiction

Aria has been exiled from Reverie. She has been sent away from the only place she has ever known, the only place she feels mostly safe. Now, she is banished to the unknown and what's worse, it's with a Savage. He doesn't want her there, and she doesn't want to be there, but in order to survive, they will need to work together to reach their destinations.

UNDER THE NEVER SKY is a story filled with romance, action, and feelings. The characters in this beautifully written novel leave me speechless. Aria is a main character that I can't help but love. She is a girl with mother issues, a girl who sometimes has a chip on her shoulder, but also a girl who sticks up for herself and overcomes her obstacles. Aria and Perry, her travel companion/savage/boy with gorgeous eyes, are put in rough situations. They are facing loss and possibly even death, but both keep fighting to save their own families. Their courage and surprising weakness put them on a level all too relatable and all too enjoyable to read about.

Veronica Rossi spins an excellent plot to match her unforgettable characters. The first scenes open up with near immediate action, and the story never falters from that. The transitions between major plot points are alive and flowing with character development and a progressive romance that takes my breath away and leaves no room for boredom or loss of interest. All of it is backed up with lovely secondary characters, my favorite being Roar, Perry's friend. He is snarky and hilarious, and I hope to see more of him in the next book.

What blows me away beyond the plot and the characters in general is the relationship between Perry and Aria. Rossi gives stunning looks into their characters that match the progression of their getting to know each other. Each reveal and discovery is smoothly done and an immense pleasure to read. They are far from predictable and make choices that thoroughly surprised me.

UNDER THE NEVER SKY is now on my list of favorites. I am happily invested in this incredible start to a YA series, and I cannot wait to read more of Aria and Perry and their extraordinary adventures.

SUMMARY

Under the Never Sky follows the character of Aria, a 17 year old girl that has been exiled from Reverie, the city of her home due to a fire that takes the lives of her best friend and two other boys. This punishment is almost certain death, outside of her enclosed city is a wasteland known as the Death Shop. It's a place filled with cannibals and terrible storms. Even the air can kill her, so when she meets Outsider Perry, she knows that he's her own chance for survival. Despite his reluctance to take in a sheltered girl from Reverie, Perry knows that Aria has the potential to help redeem himself. The two must learn how to work together if they are to survive, and find out things they never thought possible
