After her mother's death, Merry decides to start making some
changes in her life. The first change is to lose a great
deal of weight. The second change is to make a trip to
Scotland, her mother's homeland; and backpack to Inverness
where her mother grew up. While in the Scottish highlands
she becomes ill, then falls, hurting herself. She manages to
get to a small cabin where she meets Rob Rush; a modern day
hermit and mountain man.
Rob has hidden himself away in the Highlands to deal with
his issues, things that had come to define and almost
destroy his life. One of Rob's defining problems Merry
doesn't find out about for a very long time. The other big
secret in his life, his special little sexual kink, free
spirit Merry takes it in stride and embraces it. They only
have a
short amount of time together before Merry has to go back to
the real world; and to her father's marriage to his longtime
companion. In the short time they have together, they manage
to dig deeply into each other's minds, tap long hidden
emotions, and get their freak on in their sex life. All too
soon it is time for Merry to leave; but with the option to
come back if she decides she wants to grab for what Rob is
offering. Merry welcomes Rob's unusual sexual proclivities,
but can she deal with all his hidden demons?
This is an intriguing story, and for all that it sounds
like a lighthearted Highland romance with a bit of erotic
kink thrown in, it is anything but a light read. The story
is told in alternating POV's, and much of the story is spent
in painfully scraping back the layers of Rob's anguished
past.
The narrative is laid out in the almost monotone
storytelling style that the author is known for. Cara
McKenna aka Meg Maguire's style of writing is an acquired
taste, to say the least. The story is moody and often
intense, and not always easy to read. It is, however, quite
compelling. Fans of the author will love UNBOUND; others may
think the story is a bit strange, and have difficulty
getting into the plot and characters.
UNBOUND is a very good story, one of Cara McKenna's better
efforts. However, this is a case where the reader will
probably like the lead characters somewhat more than the
low-key story of their nearly extreme relationship. The
story
is recommended for fans of the authors writing; and for
anyone who likes their romances a little darker than
average.
Merry's lost a lot recently—first her mother, then
close to a hundred pounds. Feeling adrift, she strikes out
in search of perspective. A three–week hike through
the Scottish Highlands was supposed to challenge her new
body and refocus her priorities, but when disaster strikes,
she's forced to seek refuge in the remote home of a
brooding, handsome stranger...
Rob exiled himself to the Highlands years ago, desperate to
escape his own self–destruction. Haunted by regrets,
he avoids human contact at all costs...but when Merry turns
up injured, he can't very well run her off. And as he nurses
her back to health, Rob can't resist his guest's sweet
demeanor—or her flirtatious advances. The igniting
passion between them rouses a secret appetite Rob has long
struggled to keep hidden. But Merry craves nothing more than
to help Rob surrender to his desires, and the journey draws
the lovers into an entirely different kind of wilderness.
