Ghosts aren't real, right? Delia Martin would love to believe that, but it's awfully hard to when you see ghosts and when one is haunting you. Drawn back to her hometown where tragedy struck and is striking again, Delia must figure out what happened to the ghost that is following her, especially when the killer might be after her next.
Mysteries aren't my favorite genre (but certainly not least favorite either), but DELIA'S SHADOW turned out to be a mystery that I surprisingly enjoyed. The setting, early 1900s San Francisco, feels real and alive and the perfect place for a deep-rooted mystery. I was shocked at how soon I felt drawn into that world and wrapped up in it.
The mystery of itself is the ever-popular murder sort of mystery. However, being the scaredy-cat I am, there is little gore or violence. The mystery takes on a suspense vibe that I highly prefer. The characters never became ridiculously paranoid or untrusting (entirely) either, something very refreshing from some of the more suspenseful novels I've read. All of those things combined created a story that flowed well with a plot that kept my attention.
Though I highly liked this book, I did not love it. The main romance is quieter and more relaxed than I typically like. It is not bad by any means; I merely found myself wishing for more from it several times in the story. Going in line with that, I also didn't love any of the characters. Delia is a nice main character, and I liked her, but I didn't love her or any of the secondary characters. They each have nice qualities, but none win me over. I would read more of them, gladly, but they didn't spur any outpours of fictional character affection.
If you enjoy mystery or suspense, I would recommend this title. For me, it was well-worth the read, and I got an evening of intrigue and suspense from it that I wouldn't trade. However, this wouldn't be a title I would re-read given my lack of love for the characters. Based on the writing style, I will be looking for more from the author, Jaime Lee Moyer.
