The cover for LEVEL 2 iss great, the color and its
futuristic aspects.
Although, the kick-ass heroine on it does not really
depict the heroine in the book ( maybe in the sequels).
Felicia Ward is dead and she's trapped in a stark white
afterlife called Level 2. Felicia, along with her fellow
drones stays in chambers/pods reliving memories, like
youtube. Aside from watching their memories, they could also
lend this to others thereby earning credits, they then use
this credits to buy new memories. But when a girl died in
another chamber, things started to get messy, and the boy
who broke her heart showed up- claiming to rescue her --to
offer her a way out of Level 2 by going against the Morati-
the guardians of the Level 2. This might be the only way
Felicia could reunite with her lost love- Neil. But this
isn't just about her love life- before she knows it-she's
in, in an ancient struggle of good and evil and the greater
question of what salvation is.
The author's writing style is great. The idea, although not
entirely original is very unique, I never thought life after
death could be this technical. Religion fused with
technology is somewhat weird, but awesome whatsoever. The
story was well-thought-of, the world-building is complex and
intriguing plus Lenore's take on angels, is a fresh one,
depicting Morati as somewhat evil and rebelling against God.
Although, the first pages of the book, contains nothing but
lots of information about Level 2 and the afterlife. I guess
that's okay, but the fact that nothing really monumental
happened in these pages may bored some readers and
definitely will confused most. Sifting through memories,
mourning about people you left behind, the life gone—is not
my idea of exciting. Judging on these, I didn't find the
plot or the purpose of the book, but moving 50-75% of the
book, the pacing increase, and that's where most of the
action lies.
As for the heroine, Felicia is someone who has flaws,
stubborn and frustrating although, I feel her loneliness and
her longing to her past life. She's also whiny and full of
sarcasm and wallows about the boy she loves but can't have
anymore. But that's all there is, she prettily live a
mundane life, and if the story does not focus on her, I
might not believe that she's the heroine. And yes, she's not
a kick-ass character in this book. But then I'd like to
think, that she's still learning and after she learns,
she'll become the girl on the cover but we could only wish
until then.
There's also a love triangle which I believe isn't over the
top.
If you don't mind the hints of religion (Christianity) and
flashbacks composing most of the book, then you might
consider reading this book.
LEVEL 2 is thought-provoking, giving us a different take on
afterlife and angels, it's a good first book for a series,
but it has a clean ending. However, I would still like to
read the next book in the series and see Felicia's character
grow into the ass-kicking girl in the cover and premise.
Seventeen-year-old Felicia Ward is dead and spending her time in the hive reliving her happy memories--but when Julian, a dark memory from her past, breaks into the hive and demands that she come with him, she discovers that even the afterlife is more complicated and dangerous then she dreamed.
