Detective Inspector Lloyd Fellows has always been a constant presence in the Highland Pleasures series, so it's no wonder that Jennifer Ashley has penned a happily-ever- after of his own. It was nice to see that the bastard half brother to the Mackenizes gets his chance to shine in the spotlight alongside his brothers.
Lady Louisa Scanton is in the market to find the perfect husband. However, all her rolling plans come to a screeching halt when the Bishop of Hargate dies unexpectedly with all fingers pointing to Lady Louisa as the murderer.
As an inspector to the Scotland Yard, Detective Fellows is tasked with finding the killer. However, he believes it unlikely that the sweet Lady Louisa whom he has shared two kisses with already is the one to slip the Bishop the drink of death.
The mystery spurs the novella forward, creating an air of suspense that is a perfect fit for the Detective. But because of the shorter length of the novella, a lot of the romance as well as the mystery felt too rushed in some places while being too slow in others. This is one of those circumstances where I would have loved to read a full length novel for Lloyd. For me, it didn't matter that he is only a half brother to the Mackenzies. His presence has been solid throughout the series that a full length book would have been an enjoyable treat for readers!
Despite that Jennifer Ashley never fails to create a story that enraptures the sense of family and devotion that makes this series so alluring. An author is tasked with trying to make readers care about their characters and no one does that better than Ashley!
