A family of caterers expands as one gets married and
restaurants get busy. Red Hook is a part of Brooklyn where
staff come and go, and Skye Sinclair walks straight into a
job as head cook when Logan Blaise posts a vacancy. In
YOU'RE THE ONE, Skye has been working in the family
business but she doesn't want to get stuck doing office
chores, she wants to run the kitchen. This is her chance
to prove herself without using the family name. Logan is
engaged to an elegant girl from a California vintner
family, and all the Blaise side think it's an ideal match.
But he likes this rough-turning-gentrified neighbourhood.
His ex-cop father is recovering from illness so Logan is
filling in; he doesn't intend staying long.
Working for a stranger is a lot better than working for her
brothers, Sky realises. Maybe the newness of it is why she
feels attracted to Logan who, of course, is off-limits.
Logan is determined to respect boundaries with the
gorgeous, smart new employee. However his fiancée Payton
arrives to see why he hasn't been phoning, and she didn't
know he was from Brooklyn as he'd always passed it off as
New York. She doesn't approve of anything. Okay, Logan
didn't grow up on Park Avenue, but he's not ashamed.
Payton however feels that their relationship has been based
on lies.
The first two chapters are packed with dense conversations
at a wedding between people we don't know yet and with no
speech tags, so it's very hard to keep track. I picked up
the story in the simpler third chapter where Skye comes in
and it gets easier to follow, then skipped back for any
details I'd missed. The characters each have valid points
of view and I found myself asking what I'd have done in
their situations. This is an adult novel and the first
time two people make love covers ten pages, so it's not for
those who just want a sweet romance. As important is the
food descriptions - everything from fruit salad to braised
pork belly is lovingly described and seems to taste so good
to the reader.
Robin Kaye has written two previous books about the Red
Hook family and it might be easier for those who have read
them to get to grips with all the characters, but the
Brooklyn setting does take over the story. Try YOU'RE THE
ONE for some tasty inspiration in the kitchen or the
bedroom.
Logan Blaise expected to be taking a quick break from his
successful vineyard in Napa to visit his hometown of
Brooklyn. But what he finds is a complete mess: His father
is sicker than he'd imagined, and Logan is responsible for
keeping the family restaurant running smoothly. When the
chef quits, he's forced to hire the first person who
applies for the job—Skye Maxwell, a beautiful enigma
with great skills and gaps in her résumé.
Skye is determined to make it on her own, without trading
on her famous family name. Working in the community of Red
Hook offers the perfect opportunity to stay out of the
limelight while pursuing her dreams. At first glance,
charismatic Logan seems exactly like all the shallow men
she knew back home. But as she notices his small–town
roots and strong family ties, the Brooklyn bad boy and his
restaurant start to feel exactly like where she really
belongs....
