WINDS OF SALEM picks up right where the last book left off: Freya is trapped in time, specifically during the Salem witch trials where she has already died once in her life. With the memory of who she really is gone, she doesn't know which girls to stay away from and which ones to show her gift with herbs.
Back home in present time, Ingrid and Joanna are frantically looking for ways to bring her back. Ingrid starts to unintentionally drift from Matt in her search and when an old flame, none other than the god Thor, shows up, will she be able to stay faithful to her mortal?
I've read most of Melissa de la Cruz's work, and while I loved the first two books in this series, this one was a bit disappointing. It was still good; the action was fast-paced, and the display of how life was during the Salem witch trials was wonderful. It painted a great picture to set the story to. However, it didn't come with the you'll-never-guess-what-happens-next twists and turns that the other two books had. It was a bit more toned down, and I missed the big unveiling on what the overarching battle is.
I liked that Ingrid had her moment when two guys were after her as Freya is so accustomed. However, I think it took a while for her to grow in this one. I felt she was going to develop further and not as slowly. She did make some great discoveries; they were just drawn out a little. I enjoyed seeing more of Freya's twin, Freddie, but I was sad with the note it ended him on with. I can see how it was appropriate, but I had higher hopes for him. I hope he will come back later in the series to end more positively.
If you are a reader of this series, I would still tell you to read WINDS OF SALEM. It certainly won't stop me from picking up the next book, because I know great things still await this series, assuming there will be more of it. WINDS OF SALEM didn't end on a cliff-hanger, but I can't see this book being the last.
