Calliope Reaper-Jones is Death's daughter, and most recently the head of her father's company, Death, Inc. She didn't expect to be carried away by Enemies Unknown. Since she's not there to run the company, the newly deceased are left free to roam the Earth, leaving a zombie apocalypse in their wake. She must find her way back and fix it before it's too late.
THE GOLDEN AGE OF DEATH is the fifth book in the Calliope Reaper-Jones series, but as a newcomer to the series, I can say that it's all right to come into it here because Amber Benson does give a bit of a backstory to catch everyone up. I found the main character, Calliope, a fun character, but I don't envy her station in life at all being the new Death, whether she wants to or not. But a grim reaper she isn't; high heels and power suits are more her style. Under all of this, Calliope is surprisingly real. She's not perfect and makes mistakes, and this makes her endearing.
There can be a lot to keep up with in the beginning as THE GOLDEN AGE OF DEATH is written from multiple points of view, but once you get the hang of things it all flows well. I especially enjoyed the zombies that are threatening to take over the world. This book is creative, amusing and delightful. I will definitely be getting the other four books in the series soon so I can read more about Calliope and her world.
