Asprey Charles has everything. He has money, lavish
playboy lifestyle and no particular responsibility in the
family art appraisal and insurance business. Then he finds
out that this life comes with a price he is not ready to
pay. So along with his siblings, he dons a mask and plays
the highwayman, enjoying his new role. After all, life is
all about fun and he excels at playing.
Poppy Donovan just got released from her stint in the jail
and vows to her friend to lead a straight life from now on.
But fate has other plans. Upon her release she finds out
that before her death, her grandmother had lost her life-
savings to a greedy, low-life financial advisor who has
divested countless other people of their life-savings. To
get back at him, she plans one last con before getting clean
and moving on.
Everything seems to be going according to plan; when the
necklace she plans on selling to end her con is stolen by
two highwaymen, who turn out to be white-collar thieves. One
of them is a charming, handsome and witty Asprey Charles,
who could, if given a chance, steal her heart if she is not
careful enough. Together they plan one big con and a heist
of a ten-million dollar painting. Along the way they
discover themselves and the purpose of their life.
From the first chapter this story pulled me in and had me
laughing. Asprey is an awesome man. Unlike most of the
romance heroes, he is not brooding, cynical, curt, un-
trusting or someone who needs to be healed by the right
woman. You can have all that in the secondary character,
Graff or even Poppy to an extent. He instead is a man who
hides behind his light-hearted banter, non-serious attitude
in front of stress or adversary or when he is hurt. While
all this leaves an impression of a devil may care spoiled
boy on people, it gives him the leverage of being under-
estimated especially his own family. He is quick on his
feet, witty, charming, a people's person, and protective,
very optimistic, young at heart and most important, he does
not judge others when he knows he is also walking the shady
line himself. Are you in love with him yet?
Poppy is a con-woman, cynical about the world who thrives
in stealing but in her own way, she does it only with people
who deserve it not random victims and too serious for her
own good. She knows how to take care of herself, expert in
changing appearances and character according to required
role and a martial artist. How can I not love her? I love
their chemistry and how they bring out sides of each other
that neither knew existed and how they balance each other.
Love Asprey's banter with all the characters, his inner-most
thoughts and his antics. Hilarious. This book made me laugh,
be frustrated, angry and cry (though mostly for Asprey).
There is a twist towards the end which totally took me by
surprise, I was not expecting it. Though I found the ending
a little hastened, I recommend everyone to read it at least
once. You will love it. Highly entertaining with the right
amount of suspense, action, romance and of course,
CONFIDENCE TRICKS.
A life of crime is easy…until love goes all ninja on your
ass.
Asprey Charles has always assumed he would one day take his
place in the family art appraisal and insurance firm. “His
place” meaning he plans to continue to enjoy his playboy
lifestyle, lavish money on his Cessna, and shirk every
responsibility that dares come his way.
But when a life of crime is thrust upon him, he is just as
happy to slip on a mask and cape and play a highwayman
rogue. After all, life is one big game—and he excels at
playing.
Poppy Donovan vows that her recent release from jail will be
her last—no more crime, no more cons. But when she learns
that her grandmother lost her savings to a low-life
financial advisor, she’s forced to do just one more job.
It’s all going smoothly until the necklace she intends to
pawn to fund her con is stolen by a handsome, mocking,
white-collar thief. A thief who, it turns out, could take a
whole lot more than money. If she’s not careful, this blue
blood with no business on her side of the tracks could run
off with the last thing she can afford to lose. Her heart.
Warning: This book contains masked crusaders, a remorseless
con woman, and plans to boost a ten-million-dollar painting.
Expect high speeds and fast hands.
