On a cold night in Wisconsin two girls get into something
they can't handle. Just eighteen, they get into a truck
lured by the prospect of beer and a giggle. But when the
mature trucker demands repayment of a physical nature
before letting them go, CiCi grabs a metal bar and
Francesca hits the man with it, possibly killing him. They
scramble out, run, and vow never to tell anyone.
In LIQUID LIES, some years later, CiCi is engaged to a
surgeon and working on a mail delivery boat on Round Lake.
Her best friend is the boat's captain Mark, and Francesca
has been in Europe, arriving back as CiCi gets hauled out
of the lake after taking an unexpected tumble. The girls
feel uncomfortable, but exchange greetings. Later,
Francesca, whose father has a political career, tells her
friend that they are being blackmailed over the trucker.
They need to drop off money to secure silence. She's
emptied her account and CiCi reluctantly has to make the
drop. All that the townsfolk are talking about is the
planned expansion of the hospital through demolishing
homes. But that same night a murder occurs, and CiCi is
terrified.
The characters and the descriptions of their jobs are very
well written, drawing us into the lives of CiCi and her
friends and family. The small community is shocked by
untimely death and draws together for support, and the
local media try to make mileage from the most sensational
case they've known. The town is full of summer tourists and
casual workers, and the hospital expansion is a source of
conflict for many including CiCi and her surgeon fiancé.
Lois Lavrisa's amateur sleuth obstructs the police, and in
consequence her life doesn't get easier. One lie leads to
another and LIQUID LIES enmeshes us in the convoluted past
and present. Mystery fans will enjoy this tale.
