There are two sides to every story. THIS GIRL is the third and final installment to Colleen Hoover's Slammed series. In Slammed, readers met Will and Layken, two young people who have been burned by life's miseries and are now burdened by heavy responsibilities. As readers fell in love with their unique love story in Slammed, now they can experience it once again through the eyes of Will.
THIS GIRL isn't a simple retelling of Slammed. It never once felt redundant or safe. Hoover explores Will and Lake's romance in a refreshing way that touches on crucial parts of their journey to falling in love while also writing it from a fresh, unseen perspective.
Will's narration is absolute perfection! THIS GIRL takes place on Will and Lake's honeymoon as they enjoy each other's company as man and wife. Curious to how they got to this point, Will tells Lake his side of the story in a series of flashbacks that make for a creative and smart way to retell the events of how they first fell in love. I loved this method because not only does it show their journey up until this point, but it also gives readers a taste of how well they work together in the present. The juxtaposition of both past and present further cements the fact that Will and Lake's romance is unshakeable. You can really tell that they are stronger for it.
While some scenes are familiar and iconic, there is also a lot of new material added in that is worth the read. Hoover doesn't hold back. Emotion pours from these pages and every word is just as poignant and touching as the last.
A Slammed book wouldn't be the same without its powerful, heart-fluttering slam poetry and Hoover provides a few new ones for readers to enjoy. Even three books into the series, I am still in awe of the power behind these words. Each line feels like a performance and the rawness emanates from each emphasized word. It's utterly breathtaking!
THIS GIRL is a beautifully crafted novel. Heavy in its emotion but sometimes light in its tone, THIS GIRL strikes the perfect balance to give readers a novel that is sure to remain on their keeper shelves for some time. There is no question that Colleen Hoover is one of the best storytellers of the New Adult genre.
