Sarah Whittier inherits Josiah Cady's entire estate when he passes away. She's been his nursemaid and personal assistant since she came to San Francisco. Josiah made his fortune in the gold mines of the Black Hills and leaves Sarah well set. She just acquired a storefront and the financial backing she needs to open an art design studio. Sarah has also enlisted several girls to work in the studio, girls she is trying to rescue from unfortunate lives and situations. All seems be to going as she plans, until Daniel Cady appears at her front door.
Daniel has traveled several months looking for his father, Josiah, and believes he has finally reached the end of his journey. When he meets Sarah, he learns he is too late to confront his father and acquire the money Josiah promised for Daniel and his 10-year-old twin sisters. Now Daniel has to seek legal means to his father's estate and all that is rightfully theirs. Sarah is devastated at the thought of leaving this beautiful home on Nob Hill and the good memories there. Most of her life has not resulted in good memories.
When a newspaper journalist learns that Daniel is seeking Josiah's estate, he begins investigating Sarah and Josiah's past and uncovers some interesting things. It appears Sarah has lied and deceived everyone, and it is rumored Josiah hid gold nuggets in the house. Will the journalist's article expose things that will hurt Sarah's chances of opening her studio? The more Daniel interacts with Sarah, the more he has feelings for her, but she believes him to be the enemy and pushes him away. Where will this relationship lead?
