Richelle Mead stretches her writer's wings and presents readers with a brand new series called the Age of X. Departing from her comfort zones, Mead creates a futuristic world where religious extremists nearly destroy the world.
Justin March is a doctor who was previously exiled for his failure in an investigative job involving religious groups. The Republic of United North America (RUNA) is now requesting for Justin's assistance again in a matter that requires his knowledge and expertise.
Mae Koskinen is a hardened soldier, one of the military's most feared authorities. Mae is paired as Justin's bodyguard as they undergo an investigation that involves a string of ritualistic murders. Danger lurks around every corner and unknown enemies are sprouting everywhere they step. In a game that gets deadlier by the minute, Justin and Mae must remain one step ahead before it's too late.
GAMEBOARD OF THE GODS is a complete departure from Mead's usual scene. Fantasy and science fiction elements merge in an enticing mix, creating for a unique world that continues to get stronger and more vivid as you read. Endearing characters forged from steel and strength push this book forward in a way that presents several avenues for action and suspense. Justin and Mae have an interesting relationship and it will be a treat seeing how that spans out.
I have the tendency to anticipate Mead's next move in all her books, however she continues to surprise and impress me again and again. Loyal fans will follow in Mead's footsteps and enter a new world filled with mystery and intrigue. GAMEBOARD OF THE GODS is an exceptional read and the first of what promises to be a compelling series.
