Wyn Yale is an agent of the secret Falcon Club, an organization which returns lost or runaway people to their homes. He is on a mission to return a gambled filly to her owner when he meets Diantha Lucas traveling unescorted on a public coach, and this encounter sets the scene for HOW A LADY WEDS A ROGUE.
Diantha is looking for her mother, believed to be in Calais, and has with the confidence of inexperience decided that she has merely to run away from her family home and travel until she gets to the coast. Wyn and she were introduced at a wedding some years previously and she has grown up a lot, now being 19. Wyn takes her under his wing, just as Diantha insists on adopting a mongrel dog. Wyn however has a darker intent which is to murder an evil duke, the owner of the filly.
Wyn is a heavy drinker of spirits and does not eat much, which is certain to lead to trouble. Diantha tries to give him the slip when she realizes he will return her to her home, but he catches her again. Since Diantha is determined not go home, Wyn who is not very good at his job, instead takes her to his family's summer house in Wales. There they will find themselves entangled in many a nefarious and secret deed.
Katharine Ashe has put together a detailed romance between a cheeky heroine thoughtless of her reputation and a heavy drinker with a dubious background but the airs of a gentleman. The one thing I would have liked was more action and less discussion to create more urgency and excitement.
