Sir Daniel Drummond is escaping the battlefield at which the Cavaliers have been thoroughly routed when he finds a wounded boy. Only it isn't a boy, it is a young woman dressed as a male. Knowing her fate if he leaves her behind, he takes her along as he works his way toward home. They find shelter in small cottage where he finds the aid his needs to help her recover from her wound.
Henrietta "Harry" Ashby has always been a free spirit. Disliked by her father and stepmother, she rebelled so much that they let her roam free. At the age of 15, she follows the man she is certain she loves to battle. Sir Daniel intimidates her somewhat but she refuses to give her name to him; knowing what her father would do to her.
Will finds them just before the Roundheads do and they make their way to London where Daniel must report to the Parliament. Daniel sent word to Sir Gerald of Harry's location. He returns to his lodgings to find Sir Gerald has knocked Will out and beating Harry.
Now, he finds himself betrothed and very quickly married to the minx; taking on an additional debt that he can ill afford. When King James is beheaded, Daniel and Harry go to The Hague to support the new King.
As Harry and Daniel sort out their marriage the events of a deadly Civil War are waged. Harry will test every limit that Daniel sets and Daniel will find himself rescuing his wife from the schemes that she gets involved in.
Set against a deadly backdrop of war and intrigue, Harry and Daniel will learn to live with each other and love each other. The re-issue of RECKLESS ANGEL reminds me why I so loved Jane Feather's writing. Even though I read it when it was first issued, the story and characters still drew me in.
