I first want to say that if you have not read the rest of
this series I highly recommend doing so. I was new to the
series when I picked up this book and was frustrated with
not knowing what was going on that I picked up some of the
others to read first. Death Magic can be read alone, but I
do not recommend it. With any series there are underlying
plots and emotions that grow throughout the extended
storyline and the Lupi series is no exception to the rule. I
am not really sure if this addition to the series holds up
to the romantic standards of the other books, however Eileen
Wilks has certainly grown in her plots, death, and gore. I
really like how questions from other books are answered
within the new storyline. I feel that Wilks tied things
together nicely and set me up for more surprises and
mysteries along the way.
DEATH MAGIC begins with Lily and Rule heading to DC to
testify before Senator Blixton and his committee on the
events from the last book, Blood Challenge. The first
challenge we see in DEATH MAGIC comes with the murder of the
Senator by means of 'death magic' and the accusation that
Ruben is the person behind it. Suddenly Lily's life as a cop
and her obligations to the Lupi are colliding with each
other on a cosmic level. Between her headaches and health
issues Lily has come to the point where it is time to make a
decision between her two roles.
DEATH MAGIC gave me a healthy dose of Lupi! We learn more
secrets in this book than in any of the other books in the
series. I absolutely love the way that Death Magic focuses
on the Lupi as a people instead of their political games. We
learn what it's like to be a Lupi and what it means to them
to be community. Another aspect of Death Magic that captures
my attention is the elements of magic that are explored in
this book! Simply phenomenal! The surprises and level of
information that we receive in DEATH MAGIC seems to never
end. Then there are all the little extras that lead us into
the next book in this dazzling series.
While I did miss the romance present in the other books, I
felt that Lily and Rule's relationship has a new depth to it
that has never been shown before. All I can say is DEATH
MAGIC will be a treat to the reader with its whirlwind of
chaos!
Recovering from an attempt on his life by an FBI traitor,
Lily Yu's boss forms a ghost unity that will operate in
secret-and outside the law. Lily's conscience won't let her
join. Her fiancé, lupi Rule Turner, has no such
reservations. But when a senator is killed, Lily's decision
becomes a matter of life and death-and all the magic in
between.
