Agent Bernadette Callahan was used to jetting off at the last minute when Section, a U.S. Intelligence agency, sent her off on assignment. But when Bernadette is sent to Brazil to investigate the death of international pop star, Gabriela Zuada, the special agent questions why the U.S. government is interested in the death of a Christian pop singer. The scene of the crime not only baffles the local police, but Bernadette can find no explanation for what she finds. The singer's body was burned beyond recognition, however, the room she was found in shows no sign of a fire, or even the smell of gasoline. Callahan's immediate reaction was that the singer was murdered, but the local police seem to think Gabriela was the victim of something supernatural. Gabriela's home reveals a profound obsession with poet John Milton's Paradise Lost, an epic poem about Lucifer's fall from grace. When Batty finds a religious medal he always ascribed to legend, he realizes the singer was a member of the Custodes Sacri, a group of guardians assigned to protect an individual who holds to power to save mankind from Lucifer.

Lucifer's fallen angels are on earth and ready for the battle. In order to stop the demons from opening the seven gates of hell, which will free Lucifer, they must find the person the Custodes Sacri are protecting. Batty believes the identity of the person is revealed in the original copy of John Milton's Paradise Lost, but the original copy has been lost through the centuries. Batty and Callahan must find the book in order to save humanity from becoming slaves to Lucifer and his demons.
