Running from a husband who entrapped her, caged her, and made her life a living version of hell; Jilly Jones has found herself on Dreare Street. As dreary as its name, the lane itself and the people who live there seem to be fading into the fog. Jilly's many attempts at befriending the neighbors have all resulted in failure, and her bookstore is seriously lacking in customers. When the house across the street is suddenly occupied by unruly pirates, Jilly knows that something must be done to save her street, her home, and her peace of mind. But the devastatingly handsome Captain was not what Jilly expected when she set her cap for running off the rakes. As the fog keeps rolling in, Jilly finds that the sweltering heat between the Captain and herself is more than enough to keep the tongues wagging. Very soon it seems that the whole neighborhood has begun to liven up with the prospect of love. The threat of her real husband is enough to keep Jilly on her toes, and hopefully the Captain out of her heart.
After years of battling his way through the Royal Navy, Captain Stephen Arrow has taken rein of his inheritance and overtaken the streets of Dreare Street. Unruly, reckless, and a rake to the core, Stephan and his friends have had the party of a lifetime to celebrate the end to his life at sea. All good things must come to an end and, if the mousy bookworm across the street has her way, Stephan's party days will soon be over. With the arrival of uninvited relatives, Stephan turns to the only "friend" he can find on Dreare Street...the shrew from the bookstore. Jilly is as beguiling as she is annoying and Stephan soon finds himself questioning the sanctity of his bachelorhood. Driven by a need beyond his recognition, Stephan will stop at nothing on the path to seduce Jilly.
I found myself enchanted with the neighbors of Dreare Street, each played his part and none of them were half written. I felt that each and every character fulfilled their role in the story to its fullest and was an essential part of the cast. We all have those neighbors that we meet and love, the neighbors that are unruly and loud, and the neighbor who we wish would just move away. The neighborhood was essentially all there and I was in it. This enchanting tale of scandal, security, and ruling one's own life swept me away into the fog of London and the dreary life on Dreare Street. The devastating Stephan's charming wit was enchanting and each of Jilly's callous remarks had me laughing out loud. The title as catchy as the story I found, CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MARRIAGE is simply delightful.
