"Unique Paranormal Love Story in Paris"

Fresh Fiction Review

Die for Me

Horror | Young Adult Paranormal

Amy Plum has a fresh take on paranormal beings in her debut novel DIE FOR ME, the first in the Revenants series. Some special people who die saving someone's life come back to life, but it's a continuous process: dying time and time again to save others. Kate moved to Paris with her sister after the death of their parents and lived in a bit of a daze of grief until she met Vincent. And she had no idea that Vincent wasn't just a nice "and gorgeous" guy. She finds out differently soon enough and learns the truth of Vincent and his kindred, but she can't bear the idea of him dying so often even if he'll come back to life. But is living without him any easier? Meanwhile, Georgia is Kate's opposite, taking Paris by storm and making friends wherever she turns. There's much more action to come and not just wondering what will happen with Kate and Vincent. Amy Plum knows Paris well and brings the city to life to the point where it's almost another character in the novel. While New Orleans seems to rein as the supreme city in which to have a paranormal romance, Paris makes a great second; it's the city of love after all. I liked this book, but I do have a couple quibbles: Vincent was almost too good and too perfect and that always makes me suspicious. And I would have liked to see a bit more action and tension. I had an easy time predicting some of the story, but Plum has a flowing prose style that works and has built likeable characters for a good balance. She did a nice job not only creating the revenants but also giving these beings a strong and believable back story. With so many books about vampires and zombies, it's refreshing to see a new twist on the paranormal since it's such a popular genre right now. Fans of young adult paranormal fiction-especially those who favor a bit more romance over action--should definitely pick up DIE FOR Me. I'm curious to see where she takes the storyline in the second book in this series.

SUMMARY

Kate Mercier's wonderfully normal teenage life comes crashing down when her parents are killed in a car accident. Suddenly, she and her sister, Georgia, are forced to leave everything they've ever known in America and move to Paris to live with their grandparents. For Kate, the only way to survive is by sealing off her heart and escaping into the comforting world of books and beautiful art. Until she meets Vincent. Mysterious, charming, and devastatingly handsome Vincent threatens to melt the ice around Kate's guarded heart with just his smile. He also happens to be one of an elite race of paranormal beings known as revenants-undead creatures who exist to sacrifice themselves over and over again in place of other humans whose time to die has not yet come. As Kate's attraction to Vincent grows, she must choose between the shattered life she was trying to rebuild, and the risks of loving again. But when she learns that her sister has become involved with a group of evil revenants who exist solely to murder and betray those around them, Kate is thrown into the midst of a centuries-old battle which threatens the lives of everyone she loves.
