Ellie has faced off against the monsters in her nightmares, but she had no idea they were actually real. On the night of her 17th birthday, a boy she recently met named Will, awakens her powers. Ellie is the Preliator, an ancient warrior, and the only one with the power to wield Angelfire, making her the deadly enemy of the reapers she hunts. Reapers are big, ugly creatures that kill people and take their souls and send them to hell.
Although she is 17 in this life, Ellie's soul re- incarnates every time she dies, but this time she doesn't have all her memories. Will, the guardian who has stood by her for hundreds of years, helps her to remember, but he also awakens desire.
Ellie practices to regain her strength and abilities but also makes time for movie night and shopping with friends: a delicate balance. She will have to focus fully on the task at hand to win over Bastian, a powerful reaper, bent on killing her and keeping her soul from re-incarnation, once and for all.
Angels, fallen and otherwise, have taken over where vampires left off as the entity of choice in young adult paranormal books of late. Perhaps I've read too many of them too close together, but this one didn't stand out for me. Courtney Allison Moulton does a nice job with action scenes, Ellie's struggles for balance, and I really enjoy Will's character. However, I didn't warm to Ellie who came across as spoiled and sometimes even nasty to Will for no reason. Ellie has a good relationship with her mother for the most part, which I liked and enabled me to care about her a bit more.
While there is chemistry between Ellie and Will, Moulton gives them time to learn more about each other before acknowledging their attraction of which I heartily approve. Not that love at first sight doesn't exist, but it's not always believable. ANGELFIRE has some unique plot points as well, such as Ellie re-incarnating each time after a death, and a couple twists that I didn't expect near the end. Something is up with Ellie's father as well, and I'll read the next installment in hopes of finding that out, too.
