His family in Kansas just doesn't understand what Chris Matlock is going through. The post-traumatic stress of being injured in Afghanistan and spending many months in the veterans' hospital is causing him extreme anxiety and odd flashback sensations that just won't go away. He comes to rural Paradise, PA (Amish country) to visit Jenny Bontrager. He met her at the veterans' hospital and she seems to have worked through her painful experience. He could see it in her eyes. Perhaps she can help him.
Hannah, Jenny's sister-in-law, discovers Chris asleep in their hay loft in the barn. When he arrived at the farm, no one was around, so he fell asleep there while waiting. He scares Hannah so badly that she begins to fall off the ladder, but he catches her and pulls her up by her arms. That's when her brother, Matthew, Jenny's husband, walks in.
Matthew is very unsure about this young man and the compromising position in which he finds Chris and Hannah. Jenny welcomes Chris into their home and invites him to stay for a while. She is leaving the next morning for New York on business, but leaves him in Hannah's hands to see the countryside and learn something about Amish culture. There is a strong attraction between Chris and Hannah, but it is not necessarily a romantic one. They seem to mix like oil and water. For an Amish lady, Hannah is very outspoken and extremely inquisitive. Chris is harboring secrets and memories he does not want to reveal.
When things start to go wrong, Chris begins to think that his past and his troubles have followed him to these innocent people. Not wanting to harm them anymore, he packs up and leaves.
This heartwarming story of seeking a true peace, restoring order to a shattered life, and finding a real relationship with God is a genuine inspiration. A TIME TO HEAL is the second book in Barbara Cameron's Quilts of Lancaster County series about the Bontrager family.
