This is the fifth book in Garwood's contemporary suspense
series. You again meet one of the sexy, strong, good
looking Buchanan brothers.
Kate MacKenna and her two sisters Kiera the oldest and
Isabel the youngest have been raised by their mother since
their fathers death when they were young children. Leah
did the best she could by her girls, she went to work in a
private school so that her girls could attend the school
tuition free. Conal their father had been disowned by his
family for marry Leah. His family thought that Leah was
no better than a street beggar.
Leah and Conal's girls are brilliant; Kiera has a full
scholarship to medical school and is on her way to Duke to
finish her studies. Kate has just received her master's
degree in business. Isabel is starting her first year in
college, majoring in history and music.
Unbeknownst to the sisters their great uncle has changed his
will and left the bulk of his estate to Kate. Next, Kate is
almost blown up at a friends estate while helping set up a
receptiont, but she was saved by her wonderbra! (you will
have to read the book to find out how). Then a messenger
brings documents informing the girls that their mother took
out a loan and mortgaged everything before her death. They
have three weeks to pay the balloon payment of three hundred
thousand dollars. If that is not enough, Jordan Buchanan,
Kate's best friend since college, calls to say that she has
found a lump in her breast and has to have a biopsy.
Obviously, she needs her best friend. During breaks,Kate
would go home with Jordan and help her terrorize her
brothers -- especially Dylan. Finding out what Kate and
Jordan did to Dylan's love life alone is worth reading the
book for.
Jordan's procedure was supposed to be outpatient but
because of a reaction she has to stay overnight in the
hospital. Jordan sends her brother Dylan over to her place
to keep Kate fed and entertained. Kate lets her emotions
get to her and she and Dylan have a one night stand, so she
thinks. Because of his scheduled Dylan was not able to
hook up with Kate before she leaves town. When Dylan tries
to get in touch with Kate he is outraged that Kate left
without speaking with him and telling him goodbye. Funny
how men think it is okay to do that to women but hate it
being done to them.
Once Kate returns home, she is almost run down twice and
blown up again. Jordan insists that Dylan, who is a Boston
City Detective, go and find out what is
going on and to protect Kate.
Now for the Savannah side of the MacKenna family.
There are three brothers and none of them are worth the
powder it would take to blow them up. Theses three make
you understand why some animals eat their young. Bryce is
a drunk who is in desperate need of liver transplant but he
won't quit drinking, making him ineligible for the
transplant program. The only thing that Bryce has ever
done to please his family was marry Vanessa. Vanessa has
stuck with Bryce through it all and with her community work
has brought a little respect to the MacKenna name. Roger,
brother number two, is a gambler into a Las Vegas loan shark
for big money. Ewan, number three, can't or wont control
his temper and if not for some enterprising lawyer would be
serving time for assault. All three men are
counting on their inheritance to bail them out.
Dylan must keep Kate safe and find out who is trying to
kill her. Since the cousin's reaction to their uncle's
will Dylan can't be sure it was one of them. As Dylan
investigates the attempt on Kate's life he finds more
people who would like to see Kate dead.
As far as I'm concerned, Julie Garwood has never written a
bad book! This one keeps the tradition alive and well. This
book has
it all -- suspense, intrigue, passion, and mystery. When I
read the last page I knew that I had read a good book.
What was really cool was Ms. Garwood wrote Kate as a strong
and smart woman who was able to handle her own situation,
but she also allowed her to be vulnerable without making
her a wimp. If you want to read a good book that has
everything, read this one. When Ms Garwood stopped writing
historical romances I was heartbroken, but I've come to
enjoy her contemporary suspense novels so much I had to
forgive her.
Kate MacKenna has always been able to turn her troubles
into triumphs. But now the fates seem to be lining up
against her...in lethal fashion.
Determined to get her life back on track after some reeling
mishaps, including almost being blown up (twice!), Kate
doesn't need the protection of Dylan Buchanan. But he soon
discovers there are several people who want Kate dead.
He'll do whatever it takes to keep that from happening.
