Gabriella Deveraux is on the run from her past and from her abusive husband's family. Charles Deveraux's death sends her fleeing with her young daughter, Michaela, to Louisiana, to Shadow Haven, her ancestral home. Finding the plantation in near ruin is just one devastating blow she's dealt upon her return home. Her gift for contacting the spirit world, her grandmother in particular, appears to have vanished, snuffed out much as her spirit was in her stifling marriage.
The arrival of handsome lawyer Jarrod Landry, a friend of her husband, gives Gabriella ever greater cause for concern. Her in-laws are seeking custody of Michaela, and they want Jarrod to represent them.
Despite Jarrod's protests to the contrary, Gabriella is sure he'll accept the job offer. He's always showing up at the most inopportune times. Lighting candles in the cemetery trying to reconnect with her grandmother, or witnessing Michaela talking with an imaginary friend and following her into the woods would look bad for her in a custody battle, so Gabriella is determined to keep Jarrod out of their lives; almost as determined as he is to help her.
Messages from the grave, drug dealers in the night and warnings from a psychic drag Jarrod deeper into the goings on at Shadow Haven. In the end, Gabriella discovers it's Jarrod and her own power that can save her from the evil stalking Shadow Haven.
Emily LaForge has written a wonderful tale of mystery and personal discovery in Shadow Haven. While the style of writing was a bit difficult to get into, the supernatural storyline, engaging characters and many twists and turns kept me intrigued to the final page. Readers will enjoy this foray into the Louisiana bayou.
