Aspen Meadow caterer Goldy Schulz has her hands full for
the summer catering to every unreasonable whim of
bridezilla Billie Attenborough. She understands why
Billie's mother is willing to pay for every change and
addition to the catering contract; she wants Billie off her
hands, forever to be the responsibility of the groom, Dr.
Craig Miller. Or maybe it's just to have more time to
devote to Goldy's godfather, Jack. And Jack doesn't seem
averse to the attentions of Billie's mother, though he's
not particularly fond of the daughter. But when Jack's good
friend, retired Doc Finn, is murdered on his way to a
wedding catered by Goldy, Jack isn't interested in anything
but discovering the secret that cost his friend his life.
Goldy is too busy keeping up with all of Billie's changes
to follow Jack's investigation until the scene of the
wedding and the investigation focus turn out to be the
local spa, headed by Goldy's long-time nemesis Victor Lane.
There's no doubt something fishy is going on, and Goldy is
going to find out what after Jack falls victim to the
killer. Quicker than the bride can say, "I do," Goldy finds
herself the target by a madman determined to get away with
murder.
Diane Mott Davidson's FATALLY FLAKY is the 15th of
the Goldy Schulz Culinary Mystery series. It's been fun
watching Goldy develop into an intelligent, savvy character
with a strong supporting cast of friends who help with her
business and detecting. There's a strong sense of community
in Aspen Meadow and Goldy has worked hard to find her niche
in this world. FATALLY FLAKY is fast-paced and
intelligently plotted, leading the reader through several
twists until the killer is revealed. Once again, the bad
guys have met their match in this clever caterer!
It's been a long, rainy summer for Goldy Schulz, who is
engaged in planning wedding receptions for what seems to be
all of Aspen Meadow. It's bad enough that Billie
Attenborough, the bride from hell, has changed her menu six
times and the event date twice. Now she wants to move the
location to the Gold Gulch Spa just a scant two days before
tying the knot to her doctor fiancé.
Then Doc Finn, beloved local physician and the best friend
of Goldy's godfather, Jack, is killed when his car tumbles
into a ravine. At least that's what appears to have
happened. But Jack thinks Doc was murdered because of the
research he was doing at the spa—allegations that are
confirmed when Jack himself is attacked.
So Goldy dons chef's whites and goes undercover at the spa,
where coffee is outlawed in favor of calming smoothies, and
the fruit cocktail doesn't include fresh fruit. Add in the
obstreperous owner, who years ago tried to sabotage Goldy's
fledgling business, and she's got her hands full.
Above all, there seems to be a clever killer on the spa
grounds, watching her every move. After what befell Jack,
Goldy knows that she might be next. Catering weddings, and
cooking low-fat food, could be killing her—literally.
