Jade has been promised to Dimitri by her father. Dimitri is possessive and an abusive man. Jade tried to escape the Romany and had run away once before.
Evan Dark is in England to discover the truth of his heritage. His mother's death six months before has led to some astonishing discoveries. Now, he is ready to return to his home in South Carolina. He has stolen the uniform of a British soldier to escape. His attempts to leave are thwarted when he encounters Jade.
Now he has the Gypsies after him as well as the British. He is determined to protect Jade and return her to her tribe with honor. Neither will be as easy as he thinks.
Evan and Jade end up married in a Romany ceremony. He takes Jade and her sister to South Carolina with him even though he intends to marry the woman he is engaged to.
On his arrival, events spiral out of control. Evan's half brothers are at odds and his fiancΓ©e is determined that she won't lose Evan. His relationship with Jade is rocky but he is drawn to her despite his desire to marry Glorianna.
If you like books with angst, this might appeal to you. It didn't work for me on several levels. Some of the situations seemed improbable. The relationship between Jade and Evan seems to alternate between them desiring to kill each other or just desiring each other. Jade was a little pugnacious and she annoyed me.
Her conviction that no one could care for her was wearing. Her insistence on always doing things her own way caused many of the fights with Evan. I just wanted to slap both of them and tell them to talk to each other for a few minutes.
Just when I thought the book was coming to an end, there was another dramatic situation thrown in. It wasn't needed for the happy ending and contributed to the improbability for me.
Cultures clash and passions collide when a stunning deathbed confession by his mother sends Evan Dark, the heir to a sprawling South Carolina plantation, to England in search of information about the father he never knew. Evan, a Southern gentleman who has just discovered his Gypsy heritage, cannot resist coming to the aid of a spirited young Gypsy woman, Jade of the Lowara tribe, who has fled her campsite after learning she is betrothed to a brutal clansman. Jade's father, seeing an opportunity to bring wealth to his clan through marriage, pegs Evan as Jade's bridegroom. Coerced into marrying Jade, Evan intends to abandon his Gypsy bride and return to South Carolina, where his own fiancΓ©e awaits him, unaware that she has been unfaithful with his half brother and that the twoΒ are plotting to challenge Evanβs status as heir. When loyalties divide and fortunes are at risk, will Jade's love be enough?
