This is a wonderful read full of different types of magic, fascinating characters, an intriguing plot and politics that does everything possible to interfere with Allie's life. Devon Monk is an excellent storyteller; she manages to write a vivid and captivating story for her fans and newcomers alike. Anyone familiar with this series will be treated to a new adventure, while new fans can read without felling lost. MAGIC IN THE SHADOWS is full of fascinating characters, mysterious and power hungry villains, and twists that keep everyone guessing until the very end. I loved seeing a main character with obstacles that she has to deal with and overcome every day, complex relationships that most people can relate to, and a life that is full of surprises. I was refreshing to see a strong female character who didn't rely on magic or physical superiority to make her that way. This book will keep everyone turning the pages to see what happens next and salivating for more. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the Allie Beckstrom series.
