Aidan de Quincy has given up on women after being rejected by the love of his life. However, he cannot ignore them completely especially when a darling three year old named Melody blocks his entrance into his gentleman's club. She is rather adamant that her father is a member of the club, so Aidan along with his friend Colin feel obliged to help her discover who he may be. He is rather certain that he cannot be the father, but her sudden appearance leaves him wondering. Now he must locate Madeleine, his one time lover, to find out the truth. He never expected to still be so attracted to her, but he must focus on the girl. Is this child his daughter? Why did she not tell him? Why would she give her up into his care without any explanations?
Madeleine Chandler harbors a dark secret, one so abhorrent that she closes her life off from the rest of the world. Only one person has ever made it past her barriers, and that is Aidan de Quincy, the one man she loved so much that she had to let him go. Now an unsavory character from her past has caught up with her, and she has no choice but to face him head on. Fortunately, Aidan, the man she has been dreaming about for the past three years, shows up on her doorstep just in time. He is spouting nonsense about a child, and she agrees with him just so she can seek refuge. What is one more lie when she has told him so many? However, Aidan still appeals to her, and she knows that the damage to her heart will never be repaired. Will she ever tell him the truth? Dare she even hope that he will forgive her?
Celeste Bradley has written a delightful historical romance sprinkled generously with humor. She has created a wonderful set of characters with a very entertaining dilemma. I was quite taken with the plight of the precocious child, and the men who are so helpful in caring for the girl. The chemistry between Aidan and Madeleine is undeniable yet they try their hardest to deny the bond between them. The remaining characters will not be so easily forgotten as they add much in the way of witty dialogue and intrigue. DEVIL IN MY BED is by far one of the most exciting, passionate, and humorous historical romances that I have read in awhile. I am hooked on this fabulously entertaining series, and I cannot wait to see what happens next with Colin's story as we continue the search to discover Melody's paternity.
