After a memorial service to honor those fishermen who died when their vessel was lost, the good citizens of Moraine demand Linnea Kiaho leave their shores. Even Marra, her sister has turned her back with the deeply religious people.
She arrives at Middlehaven and Iain, her goal and reason for hope. She admits she has been having deep rooted dreams, visions of places she has never seen, sights that came while she was in Otherspace. Iain recognizes that she is suffering from Othermind, a condition some pilots are afflicted with. It is valid for grounding because pilots have jumped and never returned, lost to its madness.
The Hidden Worlds every able pilot. They are again battling the Cold Minds, a war they can not afford to lose. The Line Council refuses to see the possibility that if humans still exist in Earth's solar system, they might have a weapon to combat the Cold Minds. They won't risk sending manpower or ships to investigate it.
On the way back to Paradais, their home base, Linnea receives a new message. This time it's not just images, but a jump point, a destination back to Earth's solar system. Iain threatens to ground her. Before she can steal his ship and leave he shares a secret. He's known the visions were once real. He agrees to go with her, without the consent or knowledge of the Line Council or they'll both be grounded.
On the perilous long journey, the ship's systems are shutting down, life support is barely adequate, but they arrive at the wrong time. The pilot transmitting the messages isn't on the boarding party, and they are treated as possible hostile dignitaries. Brought back to health, they are provided with limited access to their society and how they survived in the solar system for the last few centuries.
Guarded by the Tritons who wants her ship for unknown reasons, Linnea is taken to the infirmary, and kidnapped by the deepsiders. On the condition Iain can leave with her ship and find her, he helps First Pilot for Triton, Kimura Hiso, finally learning the truth. Their price for freedom, for life, is too steep.
THE DARK REACHES by Kristin Landon is an adventure, Sci-Fi novel that is character driven. Her book immediately sucked me into the story. It is well written and thought provoking. I look forward to reading her other books.
