Bike messenger, Evie Scelan received a call in the middle of
the night from a man she thought was dead. Frank the jerk,
as she has labeled him was her first love when she was a
teenager. Because of a horrible misunderstanding, he left
her and was assumed to be dead. Now fifteen years later, he
calls her asking for help. He is involved in something
deadly. Before she can find out, the call is interrupted by
another voice that doesn't sounds human. A chill goes
through Evie's body because she now knows she is in danger.
Boston, Massachusetts is filled with supernatural oddities
and Evie is one of them. She is known as "Hound", a woman
who has a special power where she can locate people and
things. Offering this service supplements her income but she
walks a fine line as the dark underworld calls to her where
her unique abilities would be welcomed.
Evie just wants to live a normal life, but because she still
cares for her former lover, she will search for answers
about his disappearance and why he has taken so long to get
in touch with her. She must venture into Boston's seedy
underground. There she find out about the Bright
Brotherhood, a powerful gang who runs Boston's secret
magical society. The Brotherhood now knows all about Evie
and wants her to join them. She has no choice but to beat
them at their own game, even though she may loose her soul
in the process.
SPIRAL HUNT is yet another Urban Fantasy where the main
female protagonist is much of a loner with a special secret
ability that no one must know about. Margaret Ronald's
Boston setting is the one unique thing about this book.
Unfortunately everything else has a, been there, done that
vibe. At times the story dragged and the action doesn't
really pick up till the very end of the story. The majority
of the characters seem a bit too dull in personality for my
tastes and Evie's insights on who she knows and what she
sees becomes annoying.
The majority of the time I was confused because things would
happen so fast. The tension and plot had merit and Evie may
be one of those characters some Urban Fantasy fans may
enjoy, but I just could find myself forming an emotional
connection with her. Magic and suspense is very relevant,
but overall I was a bit let down by the outcome of SPIRAL HUNT.
Some people have the Sight. Genevieve Scelan has the Scent.
They call her "Hound," and with her unique supernatural
sense Evie can track nearly anything—lost keys, vanished
family heirlooms . . . even missing people. And though she
knows to stay out of the magical undercurrent that runs
beneath Boston's historic streets, a midnight phone call
from a long-vanished lover will destroy the careful
boundaries she has drawn. Now, to pay a years-old debt, Evie
must venture into the shadowy world that lies between myth
and reality, where she will find betrayal, conspiracies, and
revelations that will shatter all she believes about herself
and the city she claims as home.
